Business Committee

The Business Committee meets approximately 2 weeks prior to Presbytery meetings and as required. 

Agenda Setting

Order of Business 
SO:22 - Order of Business is set by the Clerk in consultation with the Business Committee.

Communications & Media

It has oversight of all communications including Newsletter, Website and Social Media.

Meetings & Conferences

It is responsible for preparation in advance of Meetings and Conferences including facilitation of online and hybrid gathering. It determines venues and online arrangements for meetings (SO:8), which include Ordinary Meetings (SO:10) and Specific Purpose Meetings (SO:11)

Nominations

  • Membership of Presbytery

  • New Representative Elders

  • Annual Review and appointment of Balancing Elders

  • Corresponding Membership (SO:2)

  • Nomination of Moderator

  • Annually at meeting following General Assembly (SO:3)

  • Nomination of Committee Membership and Conveners

  • Conveners 
    In consultation with Committee Conveners, the Clerk (or another BC member delegated by the Clerk) brings proposals for Convener appointments as per SO:18.  Nominations are presented by BC to Presbytery.

  • Committee Membership 
    In consultation with Committees, the Clerk (or another BC member delegated by the Clerk) presents proposed Committee Membership to BC which in turn will present proposed membership to Presbytery.

  • Appointment of Interim Moderators if required during a minister’s illness. (SO:49)

  • Nominations to Assembly Committees 
    In consultation with relevant presbytery Committees, BC ensures that requests for Presbytery Representation on Assembly Committees, Councils and Forums are submitted. BC encourages all Presbyters to consider nominations for all Assembly bodies, and where appropriate Presbytery endorsement can be noted on the nomination form.

  • Representation at Conferences 
    When Assembly Committees or other bodies request Presbytery representative participation at Meetings, Conferences and events this should be notified in Presbytery communications, and where appropriate participants may be asked to report to a Presbytery meeting or via website and/or social media.

    Remits from General Assembly

  • Ensure that Barrier Act remits, consultations and instructions (including ‘urges’) to Presbytery are remitted to appropriate Presbytery Committees (inc Business Committee) (SO: 25)
